The Vera C. Rubin Observatory has kicked off its 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) with a breathtaking image of the Virgo Cluster, capturing about 10 million galaxies in a single frame. From its home atop Cerro Pachón in Chile, the Rubin telescope will scan the Southern Hemisphere’s skies every three nights — the most ambitious survey of its kind.
Powered by the largest digital camera ever built, LSST aims to unravel mysteries like dark energy and dark matter while delivering an unprecedented map of 40 billion celestial objects. This first glimpse already shows we are on the edge of a scientific transformation.
